Volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 9th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for a day of activities aimed at restoring a patch of land that has negatively impacted water quality in Hayden Creek. Volunteers will plant, stake and protect Larch seedlings. All participants will be treated to refreshments provided by the Watershed Association. To register, click here.

The planting event will take place at the confluence of Ohio Match Rd. and FSR 437. It is recommended that volunteers go north on Rimrock Rd. to Ohio Match Rd. and turn east (right). Access via FSR 437 is discouraged due to adverse road conditions.

Volunteers are urged to wear sturdy shoes, work gloves, insect repellent, and sunscreen, and bring a reusable water bottle and a flat-blade spade if they have one.

The event, titled “Healthy Hayden Creek,” marks the culmination of a year-long collaboration between the Hayden Lake Watershed Association (HLWA), the Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District (HLWID), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Idaho Dept of Environmental Quality (IDEQ).

The collaboration will result in the recycling rather than the disposal of the large cedar float-logs – full of bolts and nails from abandoned docks - that become navigational hazards across Hayden Lake each year. Traditionally, the HLWID removes and disposes of the logs as part of their annual debris removal program. For the first time, these float logs will be repurposed in a reclamation project. They will serve as protective barriers against erosion and vehicular damage for the seedlings planted during the May 3rd Healthy Hayden Creek event.

The event is the brainchild of Geoff Harvey, the President Emeritus of the Hayden Lake Watershed Association, and Lake Manager Todd Walker. They envisioned the unique recycling program as a pilot project that other lakes and waterways could adopt. The two approached the DEQ to secure a Clean Water Act Section 319 Grant to help defray the costs of excavation, soil preparation and log placement. The grant was approved in Fall 2024.

Hydrologist Chris Robinson worked on behalf of the third collaborator, the United States Forest Service. Robinson worked with the Hayden Lake Watershed Association to obtain necessary permits and identify the planting area. The district management at USFS recognized the importance of Hayden Creek for the lake’s overall health and joined the project to help mitigate the effects of both soil erosion and sedimentation. The seedlings for the planting event were sourced from the USFS’s Coeur d’Alene Nursery.

“We’re hoping this event becomes a pilot program that will work with the forest service to help re-vegetate and reclaim areas that flow into waterways, both here and elsewhere in the forest and across the county,” says Harvey. “This is an opportunity to engage with our community – our friends and neighbors, kids and adults - to enhance the quality of water flowing into Hayden Lake and to learn why this work is so important to the environment we all share.”

“We are so pleased to bring so many partners together for the health of the watershed,” says Harvey. “We all benefit from a healthy Hayden Lake.”

Dear HLWA Members and Friends,

There are moments that remind us why we work so hard to protect this special place, and today is one of them.

Because of your voices, your hours of research, and your unwavering commitment to the future of our lake, the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) has officially cancelled the Hayden Lake Marina Expansion hearing previously set for April 15.

What Happened: Mike Ahmer, Resource Supervisor for the IDL, confirmed that Southern Marinas has withdrawn their application. At this time, they are not moving forward with the proposed plans that many of us felt would negatively impact the shoreline, traffic safety, and the quiet character of Coopers Bay.

Why This is Your Victory: This outcome is a direct result of the bright and generous folks”. Whether you spent your weekends analyzing parking ratios, shared your concerns about wake erosion, or simply spread the word to your neighbors—you made this happen. What’s Next? While we celebrate this pause, the HLWA Board remains vigilant. A "withdrawal" can sometimes precede a revised plan, so we will continue to monitor the IDL filings closely.

We encourage you to stay connected through our official channels for any new developments:

Improvements Underway at the English Point Trail System

The English Point Trail system—one of the most popular recreation areas in the Hayden Lake community—is set to receive significant upgrades. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the trail network includes routes on both sides of Hayden Lake Road and has experienced wear in recent years, especially after timber thinning on the west side unintentionally caused water pooling, trail widening, and vegetation damage.

To restore and improve the area, Friends of North Idaho Trails (FONIT) selected English Point as its first major project. In partnership with the Hayden Lake Watershed Association, the group helped secure a Recreational Trails Program grant with additional matching funds provided by local organizations, businesses, and community members.

Work is beginning in fall 2024 with upgrades to the parking lot, which will be closed for about three days while improvements are made. This will be followed by drainage fixes, tread repairs, and vegetation brushing along the trails. New signage is expected to be installed in spring 2025.

These upgrades aim to protect the environment, enhance the hiking experience, and ensure that English Point remains a valuable outdoor destination for the community.

More than 20 Scouts from Scouting America Troops 222 and 3 spent a full day improving water quality at Hayden Lake, removing over 4,000 pounds of dried plant material from the shores of Sportsman Park. With help from volunteers from the Hayden Lake Watershed Association, the Scouts raked, bagged, and hauled debris that had washed up during spring high water and later dried along the shoreline.

Removing the plant matter helps prevent nutrients—especially phosphorus—from re-entering the lake next spring, where they could fuel harmful algal blooms (HABs). University of Idaho Limnology professor Dr. Frank Wilhelm estimates the project removed up to 10 kg of phosphorus from the system. HABs have been an increasing concern on Hayden Lake, prompting public health advisories in recent years. The Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District is currently working with a DEQ grant to evaluate nutrient reduction strategies.

The Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District and the Hayden Lake Watershed Association each contributed donations to Scouting America in recognition of the Scouts’ meaningful conservation work and community impact.
