Water Smart Dalton Gardens: Protecting Our Lake from your Backyard

Hayden Lake is shared by many people, for a variety of purposes. For some folks, it is a sole source of domestic water.  It’s a renowned sport fishery and one of the most popular general recreation lakes in North Idaho. That’s why it’s important to remember that every drop of water wasted by poor irrigation practices could contribute to unhealthy lake levels. We are facing a continued, historic drought in Idaho. While the lake is now full, it will be particularly prone to lower water levels as the summer progresses due to an extraordinarily low snowpack in the watershed that feeds it.  Add in the likelihood of hotter temperatures over the summer months, and the importance of efficient watering becomes clear.

Because Dalton Gardens Irrigation pulls directly from Hayden Lake, every excess gallon wasted by irrigation system inefficiencies or damage is one less gallon that stays in the lake.  Lower water levels promote lake weed growth and the continued rise of toxic algal blooms. Overwatering also leads to higher energy costs for your Irrigation District. Their electric bill increases with every gallon their pumps pull from the lake. Those costs could lead to higher yearly rates for you in the future.

Fact:  According to the US EPA, an estimated 50% of the water used in this country for household landscape irrigation is wasted due to inefficiencies in irrigation methods and equipment.

Fact: A single broken sprinkler head can waste up to 25,000 gallons in a season!  Since the  water you use for irrigation is pulled directly from Hayden Lake, keeping your system dialed in is a critical line of defense in lake conservation.

Find It, Flag It and Fix It!  This helpful guide from the US EPA shows you how to fine-tune your irrigation system for maximum water efficiency.

Step One

Your 2-Minute Zone Audit: Manual Walk-Through: Turn on each zone manually for 2 minutes. Look for "geysers"(missing heads) or "mist" (pressure is too high, causing water to blow away in the wind).

Step Two

Clear the Perimeter: Ensure heads aren't spraying sidewalks, driveways, or hardscapes.

Step Three

Find the Silent Leaks: Check for sunken heads or "weeping" valves that pool water even when the system is off.

Step Four

Pressure Check: If you notice a drop in pressure across an entire zone, you may have a cracked lateral line.
